- 6:30 pm: Baby Sign Language! Families with babies 6-24 months with an adult. Baby Sign Language is a program for hearing children who are old enough to understand what is spoken but have not yet started to speak, usually between 6 and 24 months. Children learn simple gestures that they can use to express their basic needs before they are able to do so verbally. When they learn to speak verbally, they invariably stop using the signs (because speaking is more efficient). This does not interfere in any way with learning to speak, and some studies suggest that it helps. Mostly, it reduces frustration for babies and adults and helps children get their needs met more quickly. it also serves as a bilingual bridge for babies who are learning two languages at home.
